It’s been a while, but I wouldn’t be me without a “weird tale” of my own experience. Admittedly, it’s been a while, but, yes, weird things do happen to me…and (finally!) one again happened last night.
But before all that, it’s important to note that I had noted to myself a couple of weeks ago that it’s been quite a while since anything “weird” had consciously happened to me and that I’d really like it (I asked of myself) if something cool would happen and I would remember it.
Last night:
Sometime I get up and sleep upright in a glider rocker we have. I just love that rocker. It’s so danged comfortable to me that I, well, can sleep in it. Sometimes I just like to get up and move to a different location for whatever reason, sometimes to use the bathroom, sometimes it’s because of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), or my mind’s just running a million miles a minute for whatever reason, and I just don’t want to wake up my wife. Today, she is conducting a big training, so I really didn’t want to wake her up getting back into bed.
So. To the glider rocker I went. This was about 2 a.m.
I love 2 a.m.
Most people are asleep, everything’s quiet. It’s kind of a magical time. Sometimes I’ll just sit in that rocker and just stare out into the semi-darkness and enjoy the moment, before falling off to sleep. Sometimes I run through storylines, sometimes study music. Last night I just didn’t want to wake up my wife getting back into bed at 2 a.m.
I fell right back to sleep pretty much as soon as I hit the rocker. Began dreaming. Had some good dreams, but then something truly weird happened.
I sensed…a presence…hovering over me.
Like really close to my face.
I felt it depart.
I opened my eyes and thought it had been Laura, and thought I’d seen her “shadow” depart into the hallway, with the hallway light on. I called out to her–but then found I couldn‘t.
Couldn’t speak.
Couldn’t move.
Well, kinda, I had some movement, I seem to recall, I feel I wiggled my body in my discovery of this sleep paralysis. But…I could not move my whole body (could move my eyes) nor talk after my initial outburst of “Laura?”
I continued to try to call out to her, especially when I realized that, for some odd reason, I suddenly could not speak. And during this a couple of things happened, and it seemed several of these thoughts, etc., seemingly screamed through my head at once:
- I was not afraid, had zero fear, but was “most curious” that I was unable to speak. Of course, the first thoughts through my mind were that, oh, wonderful, I have that sleep paralysis everyone talks about on those “shows I watch.” How cliché, I thought.
- I wondered if I was still dreaming…”felt it out”…and realized I had to be awake. I felt the call-out I mention below (see, this leads me to believe a lot.all of these thoughts were as simultaneously as they could possible me) physically in my mouth as I said her name.
- We have a motion-detection light out at the front of our house, and I noticed that it was on. It always goes on from passing cars, it’s that sensitive. But I looked back to the hallway with “the light on.” No one was there. No shadow. Yet there was a bright light emanating from that hallway. When I looked back to the illumination from the outside motion-lights, I felt something was “off.” It actually felt weird. They both did, the outside and the inside “lighting.”
- I’d realized that when I’d first sensed the presence I had the image of a dark shape, not Laura, but then thought, well, Laura does sometimes sneak up on me when I’m napping/sleeping to take my “shame picture” and jokingly laud it over me later, or just to play with me and see if I wake up or get spooked, or whatever (I’ve done the same to her, so turnabout…). But as all this was happening, I realized that it couldn’t be her, she would have turned back around and laughed at having, say, “been there for five minutes” or something or other, and we’d both have a good laugh. But, if all of this, then why the paralysis?
- I also noted real time that when whatever it was that had left me left me (I had seen it go—again, a dark shape I saw dipping around the corner, heading into the hallway—it was not a shadow, but a shape)…there had actually been no “shadow” of a person in the hallway with this bright light in the hallway. If no shadow, no laughing, there could have been no Laura.
Yet I continued to try to call out.
Nothing. Couldn’t get any more words out. I kind of felt “stuck in my throat,” but that wouldn’t be right, either: it simply felt like I could not speak.
Nothing felt “stuck” anywhere. There was just this inability to speak.
Well, crap.
So, I settle back down…and fall immediately back to sleep.
Now, isn’t that weird?
I’d think—knowing me and how I am—that I’d be up off that rocker in a flash and into the hallway and up to check on her being on the way back to the bedroom!
Yet, instead, I felt no big deal and fell back asleep!
No! Way!
Something else was going on here.
Something that didn’t want me messing around with “them,” whoever “they” were—
Go back to bed, Little Human. We delivered your request.
Smile.
So, as I’m going back to sleep, I quickly run the events around in my head: extremely close presence next to my face, dark shape (eyes…?), said presence departing me, dark shape, into the hallway, bright light as it entered the hallway, me unable to speak–with not an ounce of fear about any of this. Just curiosity.
A real sense of casualness about the whole affair!
Oh, and the hallway light was not on—it was off.
Granted, had someone (say, Laura) really come down and checked me out, sure she might have turned the switch off and on, but I don’t think it was Laura. It was not Laura. I asked her when she got up this morning if she’d gotten up during the night and she said no. So there.
This was not Laura.
The hallway light was not on.
Buuut, yes, I had been watching some “Ancient Aliens” recorded show over the past couple of weeks, and yes, it had been that show that had caused me to realize it’d been a while since anything “weird” had happened to me, but also, no, I don’t subscribe to most of their theories about “everything” being an “ancient alien.” I’m looking to the show to show me weird, so that I can see what people are experiencing, and I can analyze it myself for my own purposes. And, yes, this particular show talked about sleep paralysis. And shadow people. But as I watched this, I was trying to remember if I’d had any sleep paralysis of my own, and honestly could not remember any instances. I’ve heard of this concept my entire life, and I think it stems from various reasons that are not all about damned “aliens.”
In any event, yes, I asked myself/Life to give me a weird event that I cold remember.
I’m not here to convince anyone (okay, well, maybe a little)—you’re going to believe whatever it is you do believe, but I know what I experienced. I know what I’ve experienced across my lifetime. Some pretty weird stuff. Something/one has been watching over me because I could have been killed several times and somehow avoided it. I’ve been honestly presenting my experiences here so that others have a place to go to, if they have similar encounters or events, and to document how a “seemingly normal guy” (me, I’m talking about me…) can have weird things happen to him/her and not also be a “weirdo,” however defined.
Some background: I have a physics/astronomy degree, I’ve worked in technical fields my entire 37 years of career with the Air Force and as a civilian contractor, before retiring several years back. I am [anecdotally] level headed, but ask anyone who’s ever worked with me and they will tell you I’ve never been governed by flights of any fancy, while in the workplace. I’ve had a government clearance for those nearly 40 years. My fiction is my fiction. My career was my career. Sure, I wrote weird fiction…but I left it at home. And as this kind of person I still had many odd occurrences happen to me and I continued my research into them.
My point is that I’m pretty well versed in awake, dreaming, and hypnagogic states, with all my off-the-job research. I could very well have been hypnagogic or dreaming, sure, or it could even have been incorporeal. Not specifically a “dream state,” but an unconscious state (as far as you’re concerned) that is only defined in our culture as a “dream state,” because it’s mechanics can so far only be so described as such. I’m not going to get into that; if you get it, fine, if not, well, you’ll have to take my word for it or look into it yourself, because I don’t want to “go there” in this post.
When I later woke up around 5 or 5:30 a.m., I thought back on it all and was surprised at remembering some things I hadn’t initially remembered upon first waking up, in particular, that closeness of the presence that peered down at me. That memory came about an hour later. It reminded me of meeting my oversoul. In fact, this entire encounter really brought back an event that happened in my childhood that I had not witnessed—but one of my brothers had. We call it The Silver Man. You wanna talk weird things happening to me? Read this.
And it is exactly because of that encounter when I was a kid that I watch these “alien” and “shadow people” shows. And not one of these shows has yet to talk about this specific kind of event that I had and one of my brothers witnessed. Believe me, I grilled Greg long and hard to make sure he wasn’t playing me because he’s a kidder all right. But he maintains his truthfulness, and when he first told me it all he was so genuine and surprised that he hadn’t told me about this event far earlier in our lives (he told me in 2009). One of my deceased cousins-in-law had written of “Shiny People,” in his memoir, which is discussed in The Silver Man post.
But even this morning’s encounter wasn’t about a Silver Man…it was a dark presence, but “dark” in color, only, not as in a feeling of “good or evil.”
So, there it is…my asked-for “weird event”! How cool is that?
Sometimes things like this happen: I ask and I get a cool thing to talk about. As to what this means? Well, you’re all going to have your own views, but I feel there are entities out there that are not aliens, but are incorporeal. You may call them “angels,” and that’s fine. I call them incorporeal entities and feel some have vested interests in all of us, while most of us don’t have any interest in them. Most of us ignore such odd occurrences and/or attribute them to the imagination. Flights of fancy. I don’t. I acknowledge them and unapologetically share my experiences. I just hope that many of you out there try to remember any strange occurrences that might have happened to you. I used to have far more happen to me and more frequently, but didn’t write them all down, which is why I asked for one now. I’ve miss having these strange things happening to me.
